EQ is a powerful set of learnable skills that can help us to become more aware, make better choices, and be more purposeful.
Emotional intelligence is the capacity to blend thinking and feeling to make optimal decisions — which is key to having a successful relationship with yourself and others. To provide a practical and simple way to learn and practice emotional intelligence, Six Seconds developed a three-part model in 1997 as a process – an action plan for using emotional intelligence in daily life.The Six Seconds model turns emotional intelligence theory into practice for your personal and professional life.

Through 20 years of global experience and extensive research, we’ve shown that the scientifically-based skills of emotional intelligence (EQ) are essential for change. These skills are learnable, and predict stronger effectiveness, wellbeing, relationships, and quality of life (data).
Thoughts, Feelings, Actions
One of the most powerful ways to put emotional intelligence into action is to learn the difference between thoughts, feelings, and actions — and how these three interact and affect us. They’re all important, but they are different.
This model of EQ-in-Action begins with three important pursuits: to become more aware (noticing what you do), more intentional (doing what you mean), and more purposeful (doing it for a reason).
Three Important Pursuits
Clearly seeing what you feel and do.
- Emotions are data, and these competencies allow you to accurately collect that information.
- Everyone has feelings – all the time. What are yours? Not just the obvious ones, but the ones hiding in the background?
- Remember that emotions are data. They’re chemical signals to help us handle threats and opportunities.
Doing what you mean to do.
Instead of reacting “on autopilot,” these competencies allow you to proactively respond.
When a situation just starts to heat up, “press the pause button.” Take a big breathe. Get some water. Say, “Let me think about this for a moment.” There are very few situations that actually require an instant reaction.
- Remember you have many options. Sometimes it’s hard to see those. You can change your thoughts, engage new feelings, experiment with new actions. You might not have “the perfect solution,” but you do have possibilities!
Doing it for a reason.
- These competencies help you put your vision and mission into action so you lead on purpose and with full integrity.
- There’s always more to the story. When people do or say something annoying, get curious: What’s really going on here?
- Your choices matter. The way you respond effects others, and effects you — so you effect the future. What’s the effect you want to have?
Know Yourself gives you the “what” – when you Know Yourself, you know your strengths and challenges, you know what you are doing, what you want, and what to change.
Choose Yourself provides the “how” – it shows you how to take action, how to influence yourself and others, how to “operationalize” these concepts.
Give Yourself delivers the “why” – when you Give Yourself you are clear and full of energy so you stay focused why to respond a certain way, why to move in a new direction, and why others should come on board.
You’ll notice we present the model in a CIRCLE – it’s not a list, it’s a process! The process works when you spin it, like a propeller moving a ship. As you move through these three pursuits you gain positive momentum!
The Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence Assessment (SEI)
Six Seconds is a California-based international non-profit organization dedicated to the awareness of "emotional intelligence" (or "emotional quotient"). Founded in 1997. In his book Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman' wrote about a curriculum called "Self-Science" as a model of how to teach EQ. Six Seconds President Anabel Jensen, Ph.D. had been Executive Director of the Nueva School from 1983 to 1997, where she helped develop the curriculum along with other Nueva School staff.
The organization publishes EQ tests including the SEI for adults and the SEI-YV for youth. The SEI in particular has been used in a number of peer-reviewed studies on emotional intelligence.
Six Seconds maintains a strong focus on school programs and teacher education, with one study indicating that "the Six Seconds model has the potential to positively impact emotional intelligence development in teacher candidates." Six Seconds also created Synapse School, an independent elementary and middle school in Menlo Park, CA, which blends Six Seconds' emotional programs into the curriculum.
In 2015 Six Seconds partnered with Inspired, a collaboration between Facebook and the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence which acts as "a portal where educators, community leaders, young people, parents, and government officials can connect to positively impact school climates and the overall well-being of teens in the U.S. Quatar Airways collaborated with Six Seconds in March 2015 to train its Customer Service staff in the benefits of applying emotional intelligence in the workplace. Qatar Airways Senior Vice President, Rossen Dimitrov, said: “Qatar Airways is highly supportive of learning and development and this effective training program will be highly beneficial for our trainers, our staff and ultimately for how we communicate with our customers."

The Brain Brief Profile (BBP) is a one-page synthesis of the way a person’s brain processes emotional and cognitive data.
Starting from neuroscience and 15 years of research on emotional intelligence, the BBP provides a simple, practical summary of how a person’s style for using emotional intelligence i.e.integrating thinking+feeling to make good decisions to drive positive results.

Brain Profiles for Youth
Similar to the adult Brain Profiles, the Brain Brief and Brain Talent Youth Version Profiles help youth and the adults who work with them understand how their brain focuses and decides, and what drives it. These evidence-based profiles help youth recognize their key talents and strengths and how they can use these effectively for school and life success.
A group Dashboard Youth Version is a useful tool for teachers or group leaders who wish to assess the group’s overall EQ, brain styles, talents, challenges, and outcomes based on the in-depth and validated SEI-YV assessment for youth.
For the youth reports, a section for educators and parents has been added to support youth and increase awareness.
The “pYV” (perspective youth version) shows an adult’s perspective about the youth.
